New Poll, Is R2R a Legend?
What makes a horse a legend? Is breaking a long standing record enough? In my mind, she’s definitely a legend but I don’t have a very expansive sense of the history of the sport… so tell me your thoughts dear readers, is she a legend? And if not, why?
The previous poll on Ladies Day was the most voted on poll so far here at GbG with 53 votes to date. It was a squeaker between “Good god, Ladies’ Classic? Are you crazy?” with 13 votes while “Change Ladies’ Classic name back to Distaff and I’m good” was a close second with 12. “Well intentioned but needs some work!” got up for a show by a nose with 11 while “Love it as is!” came in with 9 and “Feels a bit icky & sexist…” came in with 8. All and all, a tightly bunched pack… well done!

grumble friggin grumble curlin grumble
but a once-beaten filly who defeats the (tired from the grind grumble) Horse of the Year in a Grade I, let alone the Belmont Stakes—
Absolute Legend grumble
She will always be mentioned with the best because she beat the best (Curlin). She didn’t beat the usual run of the mill left overs in the Belmont. She beat Curlin who may very well come out of this season as a Hall of Fame horse.
The one knock on her is always going to be that she didn’t have enough races under her belt. Unfortunately, after seeing her work out numerous times after the Belmont Stakes she appeared a bit sluggish and lethargic. I began to get a sense after seeing her workouts that a modern day Winning Colors may be in our presence in that her best races may have been behind her. I wouldn’t put too much credence into the whole injury reason for the retirement. You don’t take a filly with a fractured foot and throw a stallion on their back…..Know what I’m saying? She gave us a thrill and too bad it was a short ride.
Jason - a similar thought had crossed my mind re: “covering”. Also, love your photos… thx!
