Dammit, Chelokee…
It looks like Chelokee was just injured in the Alysheda. He dumped Ramon Dominguez in the stretch and it looked like he was hobbling after the fact. Dominguez got up but no word on Chelokee yet. Dammit.
Update: he was vanned off with a right front ankle fracture that did not break the skin. There should be more updates after the X-rays… ugh.

Chelokee…ugh, is right. Left me with that sickening feeling into the night. Wondering about the prognosis and not being sure if I would be glad or sad whichever route they decide to take. The report that he had arrived at Rood & Riddle ‘in good order’ was encouraging. (I am a sucker for ‘hope’.)
I know in the two years since Barbaro’s injury what hasn’t changed is a horse still has to have 4 ‘good’ legs on the ground. I wish them all luck in what ever they decide to do. Matz must feel like he is in hell revisited. Chelokee ran on a good bit after the jock fell, not a good thing. We will see how it goes, Best of Luck to all involved…
Keep updating when you hear something.

It’s not a fracture! Is that supposed to deceive the public into believing that this is not an excruciating, devastating, possibly life threatening injury? I have been involved in racing for over 30 years and love racing, but after watching what happened to Chelokee yesterday, I cannot even look at any of the Derby coverage today. From what I have seen published, it does not appear this is having an effect on Michael Matz or anyone else. You would think after the Barbarao disaster, and all the PETA and anti-horse racing groups out there, that industry would try to do something to try to prevent these injuries. Synthetic tracks are not the answer and will not prevent these types of injuries no matter how much the public is led to believe they will.
