Dear NTRA

Curlin all alone at the finish line in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (~ RAYMOND)
Dear NTRA,
I was chatting with a few friends this morning and there’s something we’d like to share. We thought that it would be of particular interest to you as one of your mission statements is to “Leverage television assets and yearlong promotional programs with ESPN to promote big event days and create stars”
This Saturday Churchill has a fantastic card headlined by Curlin, our reining horse of the year, in the Stephen Foster. Not only is Curlin undefeated in 4 starts, has won 9 out 12 starts, and never been out of the money. Most importantly he’s the horse racing equivalent of a big foot sighting as a horse with a successful 3yo campaign returning for a 4yo campaign. I’m sure you know all this.
What I’m writing to tell you is that this was a GREAT and TIMELY opportunity to build on the skyrocketing viewership of the Belmont just last weekend by marketing and televising this card on ESPN or ESPN2. Few got what they wanted out of the Belmont, which leaves a wide gaping whole of yearning for a kick ass horse race to be filled. The Stephen Foster provides just such an opportunity.
And think of the excellent story that Curlin makes on the heals of Big Brown. He was last year’s Big Brown, going into the Derby undefeated with only 3 starts. While his path didn’t take the same trajectory as Big Brown’s, look at him now, poised to potentially sweep in to the international scene and prove that America can produce great horses that can race and win in drug free circumstances abroad. It’s a story of redemption all the way around, and one that could let casual fans know that Big Brown is still a good horse with a shot to come back later in the year for his shot at redemption.
How many people thought Curlin’s spirit could have been broken after his gut wrenching performance in last year’s Belmont at the end of a grueling Triple Crown season where he had NO 2yo foundation? Then to have him return in the Haskell to turn in a mediocre performance, leading us all to believe that perhaps we only got a brief glimpse of what could have been.
But then came the Jockey Club Gold Cup… where he ran down the Lawyer Ron, who was looking like the horse of the year, in a thrilling stretch battle that sent the memo, “don’t count me out yet, I’m just getting my game back”!
This performance led to his current string of impressive, indomitable wins in the BC Classic, Jaguar Trophy Handicap and Dubai World Cup. HE’s our horse, and we should be marketing him as such.
Certainly there are other great story lines to be had as well. As some of my friends pointed out, like building a Curlin/Einstein rivalry as it seems likely they will meet again in the Arlington Millions as Curlin will need a grass prep for the Arc. This could also play out as an Asmussen/Pitts rivalry.
The bottom line is that this was a very timely missed opportunity to help us build that new era.
Your friend,
Dana Byerly
P.S., another friend wants you to know about another opportunity before it’s too late.

GO DANA GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree with you here, the next horse racing stuff on national TV will be the hearings…(well maybe not - is C-SPAN national TV?)…funny how Big Brown won 2 of the 3 classics where Curlin only won 1 of 3, but it’s a world of “what have you done for me lately” and he certainly has been impressive in his last two outings. If they met, I’m sure Curlin would take him similar to how Invasor took down Bernardini…..Be interesting to see how he does with the additional weight. Good post, as always.
Thanks E!
Thanks Geno! Yeah, that’s another angle, start to build the Curlin/BB show down.
Great to meet you and glad you had such a great time at Belmont!
Atta girl, Dana!
Hope someone’s listening…
(BTW, thanks for the link!)
Considering that races like the Woodford Reserve Turf, Manhattan and Acorn don’t make it onto TV after the switch from ESPN to the network…
Sorry, meant the Woody Stephens.
kudos to you , awesome piece. They should hire you.
Amen! Total agreement.
Wonderful post and letter!
This echos my comments of yesterday! The NTRA should start using opportunities such as this to prove they support, believe, and live their mission statement and the statement is not comprised of just words on a piece of paper that sound pretty.
Alex, are you listening? My battered heart that loves racing needs you to listen.
Well said and long overdue!!! I am FURIOUS that I won’t get to see the mighty Curlin’s return to US soil. And I love Brass Hat and Einstein too. And I’d like to see Visionaire and Pyro in the Northern Dancer. Unfortunately since the races aren’t going to be on ESPN or any other accessible channel (I refuse to pay for a huge sports package to get HRTV) I am OUT OF LUCK.
If the NTRA really wants to promote the sport, they need to take the opportunities presented to them. This is huge. People love Curlin. Don’t complain about 3 yr olds being retired and then NOT showcase the one 4 year old everyone’s heard of!
Hello NTRA?? Anybody listening??
Great article! In no other sport would they drop opportunities likes this. Horse racing does it over and over again, and seemingly they do not learn from it!!!
I agree - great letter. I’m sure that if you ask, many of your readers would sign in agreement. Would adding names to similar letters help add some weight to racing fan’s concerns?
For me, finding the TBA has been a joy - real discussion with and from fans.
hey all - thanks for the comments! i’m commenting from my phone now but will post a more conversational comment later from a proper keyboard.
in the meantime I commented over at alex waldrop’s blog and linked to this post… they’re good about visiting when you post about them!
You raise some good points that I address in my latest blog (http://www.ntra.com/blog.aspx?blogid=15&year=2008&month=6&day=13) …
You are right in that we probably should have done more to promote the race. Like others fans, we might be hampered by the post Triple Crown blues after a five week stretch that proved to be a very busy and emotional period for the staff at the NTRA.
We were hampered by other factors as well in the coverage of Curlin. Unfortunately, up until entry time of Wednesday, the Curlin team was sending conflicting messages about whether or not Curlin would actually be entered in the race and even then they continued to hedge.
The prospect of garnering national television for Saturday’s race is even more problematic. ESPN/ESPN2 schedules its telecasts months and in some cases years in advance. We are looking into coverage on ESPNews (now in some 60 million homes) and we’re hopeful that ESPN and others will cover the Stephen Foster as the news story it is.
Despite these hurdles, we are in total agreement that our sport needs to do all it can do to promote its stars. And aside from Big Brown there is no bigger star than Curlin as he seeks to surpass the legendary Cigar in career earnings. Saturday afternoon, like many fans, I’ll be seeking out a way to watch Curlin as he moves one step closer to history.
I see your link about next week’s hearings in Washington, D.C. I’ll be writing about my testimony and thoughts on what promises to be a media frenzy in the next couple of days over at NTRA.com.
Mr Waldrop, standings would be nice, it gives races context, brings in casual fans, and does work. you have the championships = BC you have quasi playoffs = W&YI, but no regular season, us fans know the regular season is the Graded Stakes, but casual fans haven’t figured that out.
Damn, girl! ;) Way to go!
Wow!
First off, thanks again to everyone for commenting/sharing your thoughts + welcome to the new commenters, I think I recognize some of you from The Rail.
Alex - thanks so much for stopping by and commenting, I was hoping you would but didn’t expect your post. Again, wow!
It’s a fair point that it’s hard to coordinate these events with ESPN / ESPN2 when the entrants aren’t settled until a few days before the actual race. I wonder how other sports like Tennis or Golf handle this (please note, I don’t follow other sports so that might not be the right analogy).
However, the only thing I would add here is that taking a long holistic view of the season could pin point ways to capitalize on momentum.
And Patrick raises a good point too, casual fans don’t understand that we actually have seasons. They barely understand that there’s a prep season for the Derby (our pals the Hennegan Brothers have taken a great shot at solving that problem).
Standings could certainly help as well as making the divisions more prominent. Racing is not the easiest sport or game to understand, we really have to help those people who are genuinely interested to engage with us, not just hope that figure out how to (like I did… but I’m glad I did!).
Way to go Dana!!!! Thank you so much for calling attention to this. You know how much I love Curlin. Job well done - I tip my hat to you!
Also, I’ll be hoping for the best with Twinspires TV beta tomorrow!
Well done, Dana (and let’s go, Curlin)!
well well well…Bellwether Productions / Carousel Of Legends / Legends On Tour…all trademarked is about to show all how to bring all Horse Racing (they still race Standredbreds too) back to the top of the sports world where it rightfully belongs…Alex knows who Bellwether Productions is as we have been on the HORN many many times (over the last five years) telling them & who ever would listen, but not many wanted to listen…well they are now & its our time to shine & all Horse Racing is going to shine with US…Long Live The King & Bellwether…ty Dana as we need all the help we can muster…James G. Staples…Promotor & Owner!!!
ps…just a year ago 98% of AMERCIA didn’t even know The Immortal John Henry WAS alive (98% might be high) & well @ the Ky. Horse Park…EXPOSURE is what we have been preaching all along…get busy…the freak is alive & well in our hearts…
Hi Dana:
Congrats! It is great to see that you have the ear of the big man at the NTRA. I understand his point about the difficulty of coordinating events around certain horses. However, with a harder PR push they might (at the very least) have a race with the best horse in the world covered on sportscenter.
Really enjoy your blog — thanks!
Thanks Kevin S, Superfecta, Bellwether & Kevin!
Kevin, I agree re: coordination… it can’t be easy. A commenter over the NTRA post suggested ESPN Classic as well. Hopefully next year we can get some better planning in advance, and perhaps watch Pyro in the Stephen Foster after someone wins the Triple Crown!
THEY RAN YOUR STORY ON NTRA!!!! YOU RULE!!!!!!!

I posted a screenshot image for you on my flickr. Cheers to you. People like you make what I do worthwhile.
Dana….Congrats! When I was scroling through the ntra site to see the Crling results, I stumbled upon the open letter to you. I guess the next poll will be getting bigger numbers now. You hit the big time. :) Now if we can only get the same response from NYRA and their laundry list of problems.
Nice work Dana,
Alex’s reply was no confidence builder, he’s part of the problem not the solution and his answer about planning for TV coverage just proves it. No one at the NTRA is forward thinking and the lack of TV coverage proves it.
Trackback: Two Champs
Thanks Charles!!!
Jason, I won’t hold my breath for NYRA, but I will continue to rant about them! But now that Brooklyn Backstretch has illuminated the door to contact them, maybe we have a shot. And yeah, now I need a new poll!
John, I have to agree with the no forward thinking part but I also have to give Alex the benefit of the doubt in that he was willing to open the floodgates and start to dialog with the fans via his blog. I’ve worked with & seen plenty of organizations that are trapped in reactive mode and the NTRA seems no different. It’s hard to get out of (I’m working on some these same issues at work right now) but not impossible. I think we should take it upon ourselves as fans to keep the dialog open with the NTRA and keep after them. If they are really listening we can start to make some progress.
Those who are surprised that Waldrop’s in a permanent coma - including Waldrop himself - only have themselves to blame.
I posted a request to NTRA a couple of months ago. Could they please arraign their trainer, jockey-owner “bio’s” in alphabetical order?
Waldrop himself - allegedly - responded, and the response was more pathetic than the state of NTRA’s eyesore Internet site. He literally had the balls to assert that they were, indeed in alphabetical order.
They certainly are - if “H” belongs in the “A” listings, and “L” comes before “D.”
And this is a “national” executive of racing who is expected to pay attention as to when racing’s BEST thoroughbred was going to next run - and do something about guaranteeing that the race would be made available everywhere on a “no if ands or buts” basis?
Naturally, his insincere, meaningless PR-oriented response ensued.
If he really had been contrite that he had fallen on his ass, he would have fined himself $500 out of his own pocket, in the form of a public donation to the American Red Cross, or some similar worthy recipient.
Don - it’s too bad you’re so shy! :)
I just checked out their bio listing and indeed their following several sorting methods, sometimes using the first name and sometimes using the last name.
While I’m willing to take a wait and see attitude, it’s doesn’t look like anyone from NTRA has been back to follow the conversation, which is something I know I would want to do.
I noticed this today, which isn’t so bad but I think they’ve got a ways to go.
I do agree 100% that if there’s no follow-up on gestures such as this that’s empty PR, not a situation where “everyone wins“.
