So Much For That
I had fully intended to play the Stephen Foster card at Churchill today. I assumed I would be able to do so by using Twinspires. Not the case. I then moved on to my YouBet account. Again, no luck.
Truth be told it’s probably for the best, I haven’t exactly been on fire at the windows. The good news is that I can watch the card using the pretty snazzy beta of Twinspires TV (I wish their race replays used the same interface, which would make them larger and easier to see). The other bit of good luck is that I’ll be able to watch the Stephen Foster on the aforementioned Channel 71 as the race day will be over at Belmont.
Naturally I didn’t discover this until I had gotten pretty far into my handicapping. I was uninspired by the 6th (Hysterical Lady just crushed) but here are my thoughts on the Regret and Northern Dancer.
In the Regret I’m not convinced by Pure Clan as the favorite. CJ’s Leelee, Zee Zee and Magical Theater is where I would be looking and given the current odds I might focus on Magical Theater.
As for the Northern Dancer, we all know I love Pyro and the pace looks to be right up his alley. I’m bummed that Tiz Now Tiz Then scratched as I think he might have helped to tire out Recapturetheglory. That being said, if I had access to some wagering I would probably take a shot with Pyro over Unbridled Vicar. Unbridled Vicar had a nice confidence builder last out and can close off a slow pace. I’m not convinced Visionaire and Texas Wildcatter will like the pace.
Ok, they’re loading in the gate for the Regret. Good luck to all!
Update: my inability to access wagering is already working out for the best as Pure Clan just won the Regret! CJ’s Lee Lee and Zee Zee placed and showed respectively.

Baffling, maddening: Twin Spires not accepting bets on…Twin Spires!?!
Would be like NYRA wagering not accepting bets at Belmont.
Uniform betting platform—just another issue on The List.
Exactly… I mean it’s so absurd that I didn’t even bother to mention it!
My Pal Charlie looks pretty game in the parade. If I had access to some wagering I would probably put Pyro over him as well.
Nice call. I didn’t like the second horse. You’re way too cheerful for someone who would’ve made a nice score if she had been allowed to bet.
But shows how much you love the sport—Pyro winning gave you the jolt. That’s true horse-loving satisfaction
Nice call on Pyro-He looked super-maybe next we will see him in the Haskell of the Jim Dandy. I am able to catch the Churchill races on the CapitalOTB channel on my cable system up here in Saratoga Land.
I am able to bet on the Churchill card with my NYRA rewards account. You might want to get one for the future to supplement your betting options.
I didn’t like him on paper but thought he looked excellently perky + he placed to Pyro before.
Sure, I love a score as much as the next but seeing Pyro back in form was definitely what gave me the jolt. Go Curlin!
Haven’t watched the parade here so not sure who I would have bet on. I think Old Man Buck is the deserving fav + I like Tizdejavu + Bobby Blue Eyes. I think I’d put a WPS on Budge Man too.
Wow, the win margins today are insane with Ginger Punch crushing in the Phipps and Tizdejavu in the Jefferson.
Robert - nice that capital OTB is showing Churchill! It’ll be a squeaker here as the last at Belmont will end just minutes before the Stephen Foster (if we’re lucky!).
I can’t bring myself to open a NYRA account. The fact that I emailed them several times with questions about the accounts and got no answer doesn’t make me want to do any financial transactions with them. Oh well, I think it’s good to take a break every now and again, even if it’s not self imposed!
With the wars going on in USA horse racing, a real alternative is the offshore account. There are several honest sites in operation long term that still accept US players. Many have the exchange option where you can wager to win or lose and get the odds you request with a max limit of 5% takeout.
None of these funds help racing here. In my view, racing is doing nothing to attract, keep or help the wagering fan. And we ARE racing. House of cards that collapses when the fans are gone.
Let them keep ripping at each other’s throat and join any number of good offshore site’s. E-Horse, to mention one, is one of my personal fav’s. Google terms like wagering exchanges or offshore sports betting, etc. to locate others. The good ones have history and are easily researched.
After the pres election, the bank transaction bill for online wagering sites WILL BE overturned, if not sooner. Two bills to do just that are being considered with strong support.
See you in the short line.
LuckRules - interesting. I haven’t looked into or even thought about an offshore account…. yet.
I agree wholeheartedly that the industry puts the wagering fan dead last but the thing that disturbs me about it is how unwilling the wager fan seems to be to withhold their leverage.
Mind you, this opinion was formed loosely based on the petition that some of us put together asking the BC change the (stupid) name Ladies Classic either back to Distaff or to Filly & Mare Classic.
The petition states that the under signed would not watch, wager on or attend the BC. Many people agreed with the petition but were not willing to withhold their wagering (or watching… hello, we have the internet for race replays + you can still DVR it!) to make their point. So, in part, I have to count fans complicity as a part of the issue, albeit, not the biggest part.
