Speaking of Great Fillies

Go For Wand & Randy Romero after the 1990 Mother Goose (budmeister 26.2)
I just noticed that Dan Ilman did a nice post on the great filly Go For Wand that chronicles her career with links to racing highlights that’s definitely worth a look.
“Having by this time gained enormous respect and affection for her, New Yorkers bet Go for Wand down to 1-10 in the Beldame Stakes on October 7 and were rewarded with a typical tour de force. She raced nine furlongs in a track-record 1:45 4/5 to win by almost five lengths from some hard-hitting fillies and mares including Colonial Waters, the runnerup, winner of more than $1,000,000.”
Here’s the 1990 Beldame Stakes:
Turning our attention to current rapidly improving fillies, you probably noticed that Zaftig (excellent picture here) was sidelined with a foot bruise. This means she’ll miss the Mother Goose, which was to be her match up against Oak winner Proud Spell. Hopefully she’ll be ready for the Coaching Club Oaks on July on 19th.
Did I mention Mushka is back on the work tab?

You gotta love the filly and mares. There is alot more value in emotionally investing in them than the boys.
Thanks for the video — I’d heard much about Go for Wand, but came to the sport too late to see her race. By the way, there are some great filly/mare races offered as voting options in the Top 25 Breeders’ Cup Races poll. Truly cool that the poll links to videos of all of the contenders. My goodness, check out the race by Pebbles in the ‘85 Turf!
Thanks QQ, will check it out!!
I became a true racing fan after seeing Go For Wand in the 1990 Alabama. It will be a long time before we see a filly win the Test in a stakes record time of 1:21 and then come back in a couple weeks and win the Alabama in 2:00.4, still a stakes record.
I’ve seen a lot of great horses in person, but Go For Wand in the 1990 Alabama was, and still is, the best performance I’ve ever seen.
My vote in the BC poll was for the 2001 Classic. Just because of the circumstances. I still get chills when I hear Durkin say “and Tiznow wins it for America!” Loudest roar I’ve ever heard at a racetrack. Watch the replay.
Wow, thanks for sharing ljk… I couldn’t believe it when I read that she won the test and came back in 9 days I think it was to win the Alabama… incredible.
On my way to watch the BC videos now!
I agree…watching the fillies run for the true race horse fan is great. This current class of 3 yr olds is WAY better than the boys. Too bad about Zaftig in Mother Goose for sure. I think the race to watch for the fillies this yr will be the Alabama. Keep an eye on Sweet Vendetta. Winstar bought her recently from Team Penney Racing and she has improved every race including winning the Black Eyed Susan last out. At a mile and a quarter and on her home NY soil (she’s a NY bred) she should be tough to hold off late. Sure wish we had the great Eight Belles to complete what I think will be one of the best
Alabama fields in a LONG time. Thanks so much for the post!
Steve - thanks for the info re: Sweet Vendetta. And it’s true, this yrs fillies are really fantastic!
