And They’re Offed - TV Alert!
Breaking mainstream media alert… Swifty just emailed me the following:
Also, just saw a promo for CSI: Miami (tomorrow night on CBS)… looks like the whole episode takes place at a racetrack.
A quick trip to the CSI Miami site confirms it:
January 19, 10pm et/pt
And They’re OffedWhen a murder occurs during a horse race, Horatio discovers that Ryan has a personal connection to the case.
I’m a little surprised that they don’t have any promo video of the episode on the site, perhaps they will tomorrow? Either way, the episode title is certainly chuckle worthy. I’ll definitely DVR & watch it, thanks Swifty!
You may remember that just last month the show Leverage on TNT had a racing themed episode. Perhaps all of the former turf writers are ending up in TV? However it’s working out, I think it’s a great sign that racing is showing up in the mainstream media with some frequency.
Who knows, people might even remember that racing exists and show up at the track, unless the show scares them in to thinking they might be murdered. I guess we’ll just have to tune in and see!

If I recall, you too are a Law & Order junkie…I’ve lost count of the number of racetrack references there, and recently caught a re-run of the episode with the dead jockey and the milkshake thread.
Numb3rs had a racing themed show, but the math was way off. Someone had figured out how to win every race by picking the horse who would finish second. And he was never wrong ;-)
Rescue Me has had a number of scenes at the track or OTB.
My favorite was House at the OTB and Cynthia Nixon drops just as he is enjoying the simulcast. House should spend less time with the monster trucks and more time inside the Form.
CSI Miami films on location in Miami. I would expect they shot this episode at Gulfstream.
If you want to go back even further than the above shows, Miami Vice opening credits each episode had a great shot of Hialeah Park Race Track as well as horse references throughout.
Real Housewives of Orange County (my wife tells me this) had an episode a few weeks ago shot at Del Mar, but not many racing references (so I’m told)….
I think MAD ABOUT YOU framed and episode at Belmont once - not really on location however.
If you’re really looking for something to do, maybe you can find it here.

If I remember correctly, it was just another bump in the road for Paul and Jamie’s romance . . . Don’t worry. They worked it out and learned a valuable lesson at the end.
Really ‘Old School’ but episode #52 of “Hart to Hart” from 1981 they owned a filly race horse name “J.J Hart”. You can see a terrible copy of the episode on youtube.com
The workout was filmed at Los Alamitos no idea who the real horses is on camera as no credit is given.

There is an old saying “Out of sight Out of mind” so I’m glad to see racing is on their mind. Maybe it will help to get racing back into the public’s mind also. Hopefully, on a good note.
T - yes, I have that episode DVR-ed, it’s called The Sport of Kings! I’m convinced that at least half of the writing staff of L&O are players, they throw SO many references in. My fav is when they give them to characters who you can’t imagine at the track, usually one of the attractive ADAs. They pretty much wrote Detective Green like a player, he had plenty of believable lines.
jrstark - I think I remember someone telling me about that one, something about the Show pool I think.
Turk - I’ll keep an eye out for that, I’ve never watched House
robert - good point and good memory! here’s the original Miami Vice intro, the horse are from 1:39-1:41. Prior to that there’s some dog racing action.
Geno - I had the grave misfortune to watch that! Ugh. Although I thought we could use the tagline “even self absorbed idiots find horse racing exciting!” as a selling point.
John - it’s episode 50, “Till Death Do Us Part”… “Paul’s idea for the final resting place for the ashes of Jamie’s uncle Van takes the Buchmans to Belmont, where Lisa pays admission for her uncle, Ira has a relapse and Jamie backs a long shot named About-To-Be-Glue to win big.”
Glimmerglass - I’m on my way to check out the episode now, thx!
Walter - totally agree.
Other racing in mainstream media moments that come to mind are when the boys of Entourage go to Del Mar.
“To take their minds off work, Vince and his crew lay down their troubles - and their wallets - at the track. Drama’s “lock” of a horse finishes as an also-ran, and Vince’s brother cringes at the thought of “King” being done away with due to his lack of speed. To save King, Drama purchases the horse, giving him a new home on Vince’s front lawn. Unfortunately, Drama soon realizes that boarding a horse is wildly expensive, losing thousands of dollars to food and the required permits. After King takes a brief trip outside Vince’s gates, Drama gets a few hefty fines and realizes he has to give up his horse. But, instead of sending him to the glue factory, Drama passes King off to Ed Burns as a “gift” for Ed’s kids. ”
The ladies of the L Word spend a day at the track (shot at Woodbine). One of the ladies, a rich compulsive gambler, has word from a trainer that a horse can’t lose (of course it does, by a nose).
And who could forget “Pie-O-My” on the Sopranos?
Don’t know how much racing they will show but I believe American Idol has an upcoming episode where they had tryouts at Churchill Downs. 30 million people is not a bad audience pool.
Very cool, hats off to whoever is arranging that sort of thing. I’d rather hit myself over the head with a stick than watch American Idol but it’s great to get the concept of racing in front of that many folks.
Come to think of it, it wouldn’t surprise me if Churchill put that one together as some embedded Derby advertising. Smart.
The inaccuracies in the CSI Miani episode did our sport little jusitce.
gib.
gib - I would have to agree.
