Breeders’ Cup Wants Your Opinion!

Filly & Mare Turf 2007, colored saddle clothes would help here, no? (Charles Pravata)
Not only is it a gorgeous spring morning here in GbG land, my day started with an interesting note from the Breeders’ Cup in my Facebook inbox asking me (and every other member of the Breeders’ Cup official fan page) to take part in a little survey.
As you would imagine, we’re in planning mode for the 2009 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. As part of the process, we would like you to participate in a quick survey on your website. So, please click the link below to participate!
Imagine my delight when I noticed this question:
Do you think the Breeders’ Cup should adopt colored saddle towels for this year’s running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships?
Regardless of how you answer this question, the sheer fact that the question is being posed to fans by the Breeders’ Cup gives this optimist a reason to be cheerful! The note goes on to state that there will more polls moving forward.
If there’s one thing I can tell you about the Breeders’ Cup, it’s that they need numbers to justify any change. That was the overarching message of our meeting with them after the Breeders’ Cup last year.
So what are you waiting for, get over there and tell them what you think!

This is brilliant PR by the Breeders’ Cup. They clearly already knew what the answers to the daily double and saddle cloth questions would be, but by offering this “fan poll” it can look like it cares what we think when in actuality these were obvious changes to make last year (in the case of the double) and years ago (in the case of the saddle cloths) that never got done.
Interesting - I didn’t get a message from them, despite my group membership. But I do love a good survey…
Sorry to be contrarian but I like the purple saddlecloths. I’m sure the poll will be overwhelming the other way, and if his call on Street Sense in the BC Juvenile is any indication, Trevor Denmon will be stuffing the ballot box.
Went to the TB Derby last weekend. TB Downs has extended the saddle cloth colors to the jockey’s caps. So during the day we saw things like a Phipps horse win with Black silks and a yellow cap, and Live Oaks red polka dots with a blue cap. I think that’s sad.
EJXD2 - despite the fact that you’re most likely right re: brilliant PR move, it was clear when we had our fan meeting with them that nothing gets done over there without numbers to “validate” proposed changes.
They had numbers from various fan pollings about this and that yet none of us fans (bloggers, tweeters, etc) had been invited to participate in those polls. Regardless of the motivation, I’m happy to see wider inclusion of fans in the decision making process. I also hope the outcome is better than the ones you cite!
SF - I think the new hideous layout buries updates from Fan Pages, they’re now in the inbox. I happened to have actual messages in my inbox so I saw it (insult to injury, I don’t think updates highlight the inbox!).
ljk - LOL re: Denman. And wow, that’s crazy… maybe next year will feature uniform silks too!
