Now That’s a Race
Happy Ticket was just before my time as a racing fan but when I saw the reaction to the news of her death I thought I’d see what I could find out.
There was only one race available on YouTube but what a race it is. Happy Ticket hooks up with Round Pound in the 2006 Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn Park and the two go head to head the whole way.
What a game mare! Owner-breeder Stewart Madison had this to say about her:
She was a once-in-a-lifetime horse. Happy Ticket never disappointed. She had what you can’t breed into them. She had the heart. She loved to run. That’s what Andy always said about her, that ‘She likes to do what she does.’ Hopefully she passed that along.
Condolences to her connections.

I remember her in Saratoga that summer…she was amazing, and I couldn’t believe that I was stupid enough to leave her out in the BC that year. Huge bummer.
I was a huge Happy Ticket fan. She won her first nine starts and her connections were always willing to test her in competition, traveling to take on top distaffers such as Ashado, Madcap Escapade, and Spun Sugar. She was always game. I remember thinking the 2006 Azeri Stakes was one of the best races of the year and being very disappointed that an Apple Blossom rematch between her and Round Pond didn’t come off (John Servis, then training ‘Pond, claimed to be unhappy with the weight assignments), but the Breeders’ Cup Distaff more than made up for that missed meeting. She was fast and tough, not a mare to ever dismiss in any race she was entered.
So sad to see her go. She was all heart, because she sure as heck wasn’t all-pedigree.
I too was a big fan…she seemed invincible during her streak and continued to run tough throughout her career. Shocked & sad to hear of her passing. thanks for the post
