The Panty Raid Has Been Cancelled

Oddly named yet supremely talented G1 winning filly Panty Raid (Sarah K. Andrew)

I can’t claim that headline as my own, Sarah used it first when posting the photo above, but it still applies!

Panty Raid has been retired due to a non-career ending injury!

The injury was not career-ending, but it was decided to retire her anyway. “By the time we would have been able to get her back to the races it might have been this fall,” said John Greathouse. “She was already home.”

Grrrrr. They would have had to wait until the fall? Deprived again of seeing another talented horse.

Feast your eyes in this performance in the Juddmonte Spinster (grrrrrr) where she beat older fillies and mares. She did not go on to run in the Breeders’ Cup, which makes her early retirement even more enervating.

Please, no more bad news!

Speaking of Large Sums of Money

Today’s late Pick 4 at Aqueduct payed a whopping !46,913! A Pick 4! As you can guess, no favs won in the last 4 races.

6th: Ocean Goddess payed $59
7th: As Do I payed $56.50
8th: Sugar Shake payed $6
9th: Dancing Tin Man payed $14.90

Also not surprising that there’s another Pick 6 carryover of $154,615.

Over at Fasig-Tipton land, Valbenny beat out Super Freaky in the auction ring as well going for $1.2 million. Appealing Zophie went for $1.15, Cotton Blossom for $1.9, Irish Smoke got away for a meager $750K in comparison and one of my favs, the tough as nails Asi Siempre, went for $3 million to someone named Steve.

It was fun and alarming to watch. I loved how the auctioneer would chide the audience and throw in references to the lineage amid the stream of numbers. Occasionally when they felt the current bid was too low they would stop in the middle and talk up “the lot”.

Check in with Valerie at Foolish Pleasure for a full recap of the auction… I only watched a bit of it + she really knows her stuff about about breeding and lineages so she’ll have tons on insights.

Retirement Watch: Asi Siempre

According to NTRA, Asi Siempre has been retired and will be sold. Mind you she’s not injured…

“She is not injured, just aging a bit,” said Biancone. “We have some very good young fillies coming up behind her. She was an unbelievable mare for us.”

She’s 5. So I guess age double standards for females exist for race horses too, unless there really is some difference in how mares age compared to horses (is there?). Admittedly she hasn’t had a good year, however I’ll miss her and wish she was going to be around longer.

Check out her gutsy run in last year’s BC Distaff… she’s the grey. She gets bottled up and steadied in the backstretch, gets bottled up again behind a wall of horses in the stretch, goes about 5 wide and THEN literally pushes her way through to go past the wall of horses and closes for 2nd.

Sorry about that YouTube video… didn’t realize that annoying overdub carried all the way through until I got home.

Speaking of Tough

This morning was as I was getting ready to for work, I turned on the TV to check the weather. Of course the OTB channel was on and they were broadcasting some show from TVG.

The discussion was about the field for the Fleur de Lis this weekend at Churchill. They highlighted this performance in the fall by Asi Siempre in the 2006 BC Distaff.

She’s the grey trying to close behind a wall of horses. She tries to get through with no luck, goes about 5 wide and still can’t through so she pushes someone out of the way to close strong for 2nd. Very impressive.
