TFSIM Breaks Well From the Gate

The Outtake
Brad Hennegan with the proverbial framed dollar bill from their 1st patron & my thumb (Railbird).

While reading my email this morning I got this message from Railbird, “I feel terrible you’re cut off — I must have been standing too close when taking this picture”. My reply was “I could tell when you were taking it that I wasn’t going to be in it… which was fine by me :)”

The cropped version is much better and I LOVE the look on the guy’s face (who’s name I can’t remember… so please leave a comment with your name if you’re reading this!). He’s a friend of John’s from college and the first official patron of the film!

It was a real premier with a celebrity and everything (even though I have to say I don’t know who she is, but she was attractive and well styled!). It was a nice turn out of supporters & well wishers and we were treated to a private screening of one hell of a great film.

I attended with Teresa, Jessica and Mr. Railbird, who’s not a horseplayer, but clearly knows at least a little something about racing by way of being Mr. Railbird! He gave the film the thumbs up as a well made documentary by anyone’s standards, not just for fans.

As we wandered aimlessly through the throngs of horses asses NYU students boozing away the out enjoying a quasi-balmy Thursday evening, we chatted about the film. The three of us Ladies had all seen the film a year ago when it was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. We agreed unanimously that after seeing it again it made us feel great about racing.

The sense of emotion is so palpable in the film whether it’s the trainers being nervous before a race, family members elaborating on the struggles of the trainers or the inevitable outcome of the fate of Barbaro… you could feel it all. Everyone was all in at every moment and if that’s not a draw I don’t know what is.

Seeing it again reminded me that the first race I ever purposefully watched was the 2006 Preakness. Two weeks prior I was running errands in my neighborhood and walked by a hang out spot that was full of well dressed drunk people in the middle of the afternoon. I noticed there were a hell of a lot of hats. About a block a later it came it me, the Derby.

I had flirted with horse racing prior, occasionally happening upon a race being broadcast and being taken by how absolutely stunning & powerful horses are as athletes, how damn exciting a horse race is and how two minutes is as long as I can pay attention to any sporting event. However, without any guidance I could never find a way into racing as a fan. I knew that the Derby was coming up and wanted to wanted to watch it but by the time I got home I had missed it.

A little later I got text from a friend that said simply “Horses Baby!”. She had put $20 on Barbaro at a Derby Party because she liked his name. For the next two weeks Barbaro was her horse, and she was not alone.

Since I had to hear about Barbaro for two weeks I was pretty tuned into the Preakness. When it came time to view it I needed subtitles. I really wanted to know what the hell they were talking about it but didn’t have a clue. It was obvious that everyone was expecting big things from Barbaro but that was about it.

I don’t remember much about it except for Barbaro breaking through the gate prior to the race and how the announcers intoned that it was not a good sign. I also remember thinking how much more exciting it would be if I knew the horses and what was at stake.

The film captures the hard work of each team, the hope mixed with “wait and see” and the sheer will and effort it takes to get there in a way that any great documentary does… by being there every step of the way, letting the subjects do the work (i.e., their thing) and hanging the story together in away that makes it “real”. It also shows us that the Derby itself is the real star of the film, like a play put on every year where the same actor plays the lead but the extremely talented supporting cast changes. This year’s casting of the Derby is no different.

In hindsight I was right… knowing the horses and what’s at stake does make it MUCH more exciting, then and now.

A Triumphant Return?

While looking over the Gulfstream card for tomorrow, a few things jump out (besides how interesting the Florida Derby is going to be!).

While we’re all caught up in the current derby hype of Big Brown, Tomcito and the like I’d like to take you for a little trip in the (not so) way back machine… note last year’s Florida Derby:

Michael Matz trainee Chelokee was very much in vogue in the hype machine and his maneuver to get around some horses and close strongly in the Florida Derby only added fuel to the fire. Was he the next Barbaro? Would he run in the Derby? There ended up being no Triple Crown action for the talented colt but he did go on to win the Barbaro Stakes (nee Sir Barton - change it back!) on Preakness day and the Northern Dancer before sustaining an ankle injury.

Fast forward to tomorrow, site of the 2008 Florida Derby, where Chelokee will be making his 4 year old debut as the 7-5 favorite in race 6, a 75K allowance optional claimer (where no one is in for a tag). Drums of Thunder, also on the Derby Trail last year, is also in the race. I’m wondering Chelokee will pull a Circular Quay and have a triumphant return?

Other 2007 Derby Trail horses on tomorrow’s Gulfstream card include Izzie’s Halo in the 8th and Imawildandcrazyguy in the 12th, who also ran in last year’s Florida Derby.

Best of luck to all them!

Coming to a City Near You!

That’s right, mark your calendars y’all because The First Saturday in May will be making it’s week long theatrical run on April 18th in a city near you!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, congrats to the Hennegan Brothers! They’ve partnered with Churchill and Truly Indie to make the distribution deal happen, and if that wasn’t great enough, they’re donating 25% of their box office & a percentage of their DVD sales to Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

“Our goal was to make horse racing cool again by telling the stories of the hard-working, dedicated, and resilient individuals who dedicate their lives to the horses they love. As lifelong horse racing fans, the documentation of this film was a true passion of ours.”
    - John Hennegan

I don’t like to bang the old GbG drum too much around here, but check out their new site! One of the reasons I’ve been muttering about being busy is that I redesigned to their site to give them something that had more of the look and feel of the film + something they could update themselves (with my help when they’re busy, like now!). Also, Manny from ThirdEye Design did the two excellent title graphics and Bill Denver of Equiphoto took the photo in the header graphic (which is of Barbaro winning the Derby).

I’m flattered that they asked me to be part of such a kick ass project and honored to have worked with them. They’re as cool as their film and I think one of many signals (such as the TBA), that horse racing in general is undergoing a cultural revival. I know of several folks working on very cool racing related projects! This is just the beginning.

Do yourself a favor, make the effort to go see this film… and preferably more than once!

Guess Who I Met…

The Hennegan Brothers! Well, virtually speaking that is, on Facebook. Who knew that site could actually be used for things other than getting bitten by zombies and sending people virtual drinks! If you don’t already know, they’re the film making brothers who directed the genius and yet to be released First Saturday in May. Swifty and I were lucky enough to see it at the Tribeca Film Festival.

I mentioned it here as part of a larger point that there are plenty of things that could be done to bring casual fans into the fold, such as play their film on TV every year around Derby time to make the connection to casual fans that the Derby doesn’t “just happen” in hopes getting them engaged the following year.

Steve Crist also wrote a really great article on the film (within a week of my blog post, Coincidence? More than likely).

They also have a collection of nice clips, some outtakes and some from the film, of Barbaro. I’m gonna ask them to post some Lawyer Ron clips as well… he and Jazil were also featured in the film.

At any rate… go to their site and register so you can find out when there’s a screening in your area. They also have a film blog.

Derby Ratings Up

Bloodhorse reports that Derby Ratings were up this year.

Maybe this is thanks to Barbaro? Sad that we’ll never see how good he really was but at least he’s raised interest in the sport (of Kings!).
