Off to a Great Start

Go Diamond Stripes, what a nice performance! I liked him to win here but didn’t put any money on him at his price. I also only lightly handicapped the card so I won’t be doing too much (serious) wagering this morning. I did throw a couple of bucks on Don Renato, but to win not to show.

Regardless of how much I play along from home, I haven’t been this excited for Saturday morning TV since Looney Tunes & Super Host (for those who lived within broadcast distance of WUAB in Cleveland in the early 70’s).

Next up, I think I’ll make a little play on My Indy using the same logic that can be found over at casa de Superfecta.

Counting Down to March

Premium Tap / Allam won again this weekend in Saudi Arabia “despite a mishap“.

50 yards out of the gate his reigns broke and Desormeaux not only held on to one side for the mile and half race, but they but beat his arch rival, Impossible Ski / Radae.

There’s no race detail in the story but the next target for Premium Tap is the King’s Cup, which he won last year, and then on to Dubai, where we’ll actually get to SEE him race!

He gave Invasor a run for his money last year so I’m looking forward to seeing him again this year. Sounds like he’s still on top of his game!

A Little Homesick

That’s how trainer Leandro Mora described Lava Man in Dubai. He’s notoriously not a great shipper, but this was an interesting observation:

“Other times, there were reasons he didn’t run well when he traveled,” Mora said Saturday, as he waited for Lava Man to enter the saddling paddock. “This time, I still don’t know. Everything seemed fine. The way he ate, the way he trained, the way he looked. If I had to guess, the only thing left is to say that he was homesick.”

This seems plausible to me. Anyone who lives with animals (and in my case many of them) can tell you that they have an emotional reality and are definitely finely attuned to routine. They’re not NASCARs, they’re animals… there’s “stuff going on in there”.
