New Kid in Town

Rajiv Marah and El Amir in the winner’s circle at Aqueduct (~ RAYMOND)

You may have noticed a new photographer in the regular rotation here at GbG. In addition to the excellent imagery of Sarah K. Andrew, Charles Pravata, Jessie Holmes, and Jay (a.k.a., Easy Goer), please welcome Raymond Haddad to the mix!

I first noticed his work from last year’s Breeders’ Cup and struck up a friendly Flickr conversation with him, mainly because I was commenting on all his work! He’s very prolific with one of the most frequently updated photostreams of all of the folks I follow on flickr. His work ranges from portraiture to classic scene and street work. Definitely check out his non-racing work as well!

Around the last week of Aqueduct I started to notice racing shots in his photostream. It seems he has been bitten by the racing bug and has been shooting regularly at Belmont since it’s opening!

In addition to shooting the races, he’s been shooting the jockeys and various NYRA employees. He’s doing a great job of showing the overall vibe of a track and telling the story of Belmont in a very direct, journalistic way that also has a personally inquisitive touch often lacking in photojournalism.

He’s also not shying away from the harsh realities of racing. Included in his recent work are two heart wrenching shots of the recent breakdown and euthanasia of Megalodon yesterday at Belmont.

I’m happy to see someone get so excited about racing, particularly during it’s darkest hour. Welcome to the mix Raymond, we’re glad you’re here!

Farewell Aqueduct

Aqueduct men’s room (~ RAYMOND)

It took all the restraint I could muster not to use this shot right away, but I thought I’d wait and use it as an end of the meet shot. Perhaps he perfected this skill while reading the form between races?

Check Brooklyn Backstretch for a proper and excellent recap of the meet!

A Day in the Winner’s Circle

Tale of Ekati winning the Wood as my phone flies over the balcony at Aqueduct (Sarah K. Andrew)

Let’s start by examining my proclivity for procrastination. The upsides are clear, I tend to do things I normally wouldn’t like wash dishes, dust bust numerous hairballs from the Home Zoo and post plenty of “interesting content“.

This pathological behavior does, however, have a downside… one of them being that I didn’t end up with enough time to publish a post about why Tale of Ekati was my pick of the day yesterday before I had to run out to catch the A train to the Big A. But we’ll get to that (yes, I’m now going to meta-procrastinate).

Here’s a post I’ve been meaning to write for awhile, “Facebook, it’s not just for the rotten kids”. Of the many social networking sites, Facebook is the only one that “has delivered” for me for anything other than time wasting (don’t get me wrong, it’s great for that!) and proving that you’re a bigger hipster than everyone else.

I met the Hennegan Brothers on Facebook, taken part in many great discussions with people inside the industry, and now hung out with a fun bunch of Fans of Thoroughbred Racing in New York.

Group creator, the fabulous Ernie Munick (giving the thumbs up next Pablo Fragoso), organized the day billed as “Day of Degeneracy” to get people in the group to come out to the track and actually hang out (instead of just post on the group’s wall).

He also arranged for us to have our picture taken in the winner’s circle! I always wondered how to go about getting “Happy Birthday Adam “Swifty” Wiener” in the NYRA program, and now I know… you just call and give them $300! Get a group of 10 folks together and can’t afford not to do it.

Here we are, in all our glory (I’m on the far right… ironic, no?):

Day of Degeneracy, Facebook meets NYRA

Note the title of the picture “Thoroughbred Racing in New York “Facebook”. It also said this in the program! This is what I meant by pioneering an analog/digital mashup… this is no doubt the first time a NYRA program has the word Facebook in it… I love it when worlds collide!

Several of the TBA folks were included in this group, Jessica at Railbird, Teresa at Brooklyn Backstretch and Alan at Left at Gate (who’s not pictured… he was very busy live blogging the whole day).

John stopped by for a few moments in between meeting, greeting and kissing babies to get folks to the premiere in 2 weeks. And of course, Swifty was there (behind Ernie in the Classy & Classic sunglasses)… we wouldn’t miss a chance to be in the winner’s circle, or perhaps more appropriately, the Wiener’s Circle (Swifty = Adam Wiener).

Did I mention it was nice out? Notice us there, no coats. We ended up sitting outside all day in a box right in front of the finish line. We were on the third floor and there was a little balcony right in front of us that was gated. The gate was rail height (about 3 feet?) so at one point Jessica started to climb over it to get a better view of the paddock below. A helpful NYRA employee came over and unlocked it for us, no doubt guessing that it would just be easier than telling us to stop climbing over it all day.

The races were great and the place was packed. When I go to a track, I like to play the card… maybe not every race, but I find it distracting to have to pop over to the TV to watch a race elsewhere and then have my final decision making time eaten into. Surprise, I also procrastinate when it comes to wagering! With this in mind I decided to take pass on playing the bazillion great stakes races not at Aqueduct.

Prior to the Wood I was doing ok, compared to how I’ve been doing on the year I was doing great, but by normal standards I was doing just OK. I had the exacta in the 6th which brought me back to within $4 of being even. I didn’t do anything interesting in the 7th or 8th, although Jessica & Swifty had Temporary Saint in the Excelsior, but the Wood was different story.

I’m always refining my handicapping style, looking for more efficient or productive ways to analyze the data. Some things I’ve started to do recently have really been helpful. I take several passes at all of the horses, in one of those passes I note the predominant running style and type of pace the horse needs to perform well. While looking at this aspect of the Wood, I noted that Tale of Ekati needed a faster pace than he got in Louisiana Derby to do his best.

In another pass I examine the workouts. Is there any pattern, how did they work prior to their last races, have they been training for endurance, speed, etc. My note on Maryfield prior to the BC was “if she fires a bullet work before the race, seriously consider her”… and she did.

Combine Tale of Ekati’s comment line with his recent two works. “Brushed break, no factor” and two handled 4F gate works at 47.2 and 47.4 geared towards increasing his speed out of the gate. I then went to watch the replay of the Louisiana Derby… bingo. He broke very tentatively, got headed and then checked out of the race. Combine all of this with impending speed duel on the front end ensuring a brisk pace and it looked really promising for Take of Ekati.

I also thought the race would set up well for Court Vision, Bill Mott didn’t put Inner Light in to help Take of Ekati! This was one of those rare times when a flash of handicapping insight occurs with my ability to wager correctly. Here’s what I did:

Tale of Ekati to Win
Exacta box of Tale of Ekati & Court Vision
Trifecta box of Tale of Ekati, Court Vision & War Pass
Anak Nakal across the board (I thought he would improve under this pace scenario, and he did, but not enough).

Fast forward to the race… Tale of Ekati broke like a dream (he’s a good student and Barclay Tagg is a good teacher!) and Inner Light was pushing War Pass into fast fractions. Things were all going according to plan. As they came into the stretch War Pass still had a decent lead but Tale of Ekati starts to come on, and come on strong.

As they come to the wire it looks like Tale of Ekati is going to get up in time… we’re all on the balcony jumping up and down, screaming like nuts when I notice something fly out of my inside jacket pocket.

Just as Tale of Ekati is making my day, my attention is turned to the box seats below to see my phone land right behind some unsuspecting guy and what appeared to be his father! It took me a few seconds to realize that Tale of Ekati did indeed win AND that I hit the tri!

I’m also happy to report that not only does my phone still work, it didn’t even have a scratch… and perhaps the best part is it didn’t injure anyone!

As if this all wasn’t great enough, I also managed to get over my fear of betting horses to win. I liked Curlin to win the Classic, Swifty and I spent almost 2 hours the night before discussing the favorites in the classic to compare and contrast each of them. Curlin it was, and at 9/2 did I bet him to win? No. This time, just like Tale of Ekati, I learned from last mistake and corrected it under favorable conditions.

It was a perfect day on many levels… and I was lucky enough to share it with some great folks! Of course it was nice to have a bunch of witnesses to a rare flash of handicapping insight, but the best part by far was that, contrary to what seems to be going on, racing felt very much alive.

Great Day at the Big A

The Big A (superterrific)

It was a great day yesterday, and not only because I did well (finally)… the weather was gorgeous, I finally met and hung out with a bunch of people I really like, we got to hang out in the winner’s circle, we pioneered new territory by way of digital/analog mash-up, we saw some great racing and I discovered that my phone is extremely durable!

This will all become clear later…

Fairground Picks

Daytona & Mike Smith winning the San Gabriel, can they do it again this weekend? (Charles Pravata)

Given the insanity of the west coast, I decided to only focus on Fairgrounds this weekend.

A little while ago I was eating my lunch in front of the OTB channel. It was just before the 5th race at Aqueduct. I thought the #1 horse, Boggy Creek Dancer, looked really good in the parade, very calm and self assured. The rest of them looked a little too antsy. I wasn’t surprised at BCD’s long odds as I’ve seen him race before, but he did look really good.

In the stretch it looked like the #9, Majestic Melody, really had it, sitting off the pace and coming on with a nice run. Out of nowhere Boggy Creek Dancer flew by the rest of the field to win by a couple of lengths and pay $40.20. I took this as a hopeful sign for the rest of my day!

Mineshaft

I’m betting against Grasshopper here. I never bought the hype about him as the Street Sense he placed to in the Travers was not the same Street Sense that won the Derby (as evidenced by his miserable BC performance).

I like Silver Lord and Magna Graduate in that order, I may box them but since they’re both current at 3-1 with 15 minutes to post, I may take a pass. (I just boxed them, wish me luck… Note: Grasshopper just crushed the field by 3 lengths and took me out of the P4, but at least Silver Lord beat Magna Graduate!).

Picks: Silver Lord, Magna Graduate
Fairground Handicap

This was the toughest one for me and I went deep on my Pick 4 here, but could have actually gone deeper. Better Talk Now is clearly is a stand out, however he doesn’t do well off a lay off (with the exception of winning the Dixie after bombing in Japan). I’m including him in my P4, but won’t bet him in the race.

I like Daytona but have no idea how he’ll ship or if he’ll like the turf at Fairgrounds. I think he’ll control the pace, which should be good for him. Silverfoot is interesting to me, the 8yo missed last year and in his return race looked game but got caught in traffic, I think he could improve. Another interesting one is Baby First, he ran a nice race last out as his first in North America and will probably improve as well. From what I can tell Inca King is due for a regression after 3 wins and I’m pretty sure since I left him off my P4 that he’ll go wire to wire. (Note: that really doesn’t matter now, does it?) I also think Sterwins is worth a look, I think he’ll like the distance more than French Beret and can probably do the best on what I’m guessing will be a slowish pace.

Picks: Daytona, Sterwins, Silverfoot
Silverbulletday

It’s hard to go against Indian Blessing, but at those odds I’m going to try…although I did I have her singled on one of my loosing P4 tickets. I can’t tell if she wasn’t fond of the Santa Anita surface last out or if it really was a distance issue. The more I think about it the more I lean towards the surface because she handled the distance so beautifully in the BC. It looks to me like High Surf and possibly even Miss Missile could give her some pressure. Let’s say for the sake of argument that it was a distance issue last out, in that case both Proud Spell and Highest Class interest me.

Proud Spell is pretty obvious but you might wonder why I would say Highest Class over Jolie the Cat, particularly when Jolie the Cat beat Highest Class last out. Distance & pace. Highest Class had 2 wins at the distance before cutting back in the Tiffany Lass, also Jolie the Cat had the slow pace all to herself, that won’t the be case today. Even throwing out the unnaturally fast fractions she set at Santa Anita, most of these horses haven’t seen anything like a pace that Indian Blessing can set. That being said, Proud Spell has shown she can do it from off a fast pace and I’m interested to see what Highest Class will do here.

Picks: Proud Spell, Highest Class
Risen Star

A.K.A, the paceless wonder. It looks like it’s gonna be up to The Darp to set the pace again although he might get some help from Signature Move. This does not bode well for Blackberry Road, Visionaire and even Pyro, but looks great for Z Fortune and possibly Unbridled Vicar.

You can’t go wrong with Curlin as your morning training partner so I’m still convinced Pyro has a shot even if the pace isn’t so hot. Unbridled Vicar is my wise guy play here, I think the slow pace won’t be as negative for him as it will be for some of the others plus I wonder if he could have won his last out at the distance, and that was also a slow pace.

Picks: Pyro, Z Fortune, Unbridled Vicar

Daytona just won the Fairground Handicap and Sterwins showed in a photo to Jazz Quest, although I boxed Silver Foot and Sterwins. I just can’t deal with 2-1 odds… always the value player! Best of luck to all!

New Yorkers Love Thier Evening Attire

Although he’s Kentucky bred, you’d think Evening Attire was a Native New Yorker the way New York crowds love him.

Teresa at Brooklyn Backstretch has 2 posts about her day at the Big A to watch Evening Attire… one specifically about Evening Attire while the other is a more about The Big A experience in general (and a great read!).

Greg at Power Cap also has a nice write up about his trip to see the old man. At the end of his post he links to an excellent Evening Attire Fan Site that that I’ve included in my new link category, Fan Sites.

I thought Evening Attire looked great and ran game second. As Teresa points out, it really wasn’t enough distance for him. His next outing will be at 1 1/8 mile, so look out you rotten kids!

Aqueduct Race Replay

I just noticed something about the race replay graphic on the OTB channel… it looks like Funny Cide and Evening Attire!

For those of you who don’t live in NYC and/or don’t ever get a chance to see the signal from NYRA tracks, there’s a little transition graphic used for race replays that has a 3ish second close up clip of two horses. I guess since I was just looking at pics of Evening Attire his mask jumped out at me and then I noticed that the other jock looked to be wearing the Sackatoga Stables silks.

I believe the clip is from the 2004 Excelsior Breeders Cup Handicap at Aqueduct. The placement of the two is right on and Funny Cide was number 3… the only other distinguishing thing in the clip is that the horse with rider wearing the Sakatoga-ish silks is number 3. Of course it would make sense that they pick a clip of a high profile race from Aqueduct as well. I’ll have to see if I can figure out the Belmont & Saratoga replay clips when the time comes.

This up tick in posting brought to you by none other than procrastination!

Back in Business

Evening Attire and Edgar Prado enter the track at Belmont with onlookers in Evening Attire (Holly Van Voast)

Best of luck to Evening Attire tomorrow!

Here’s his last out, schoolin’ youngsters in the Queens County Handicap, what you don’t see in this replay is that Evening Attire was running around like a nut in the parade. Every shot of every horse had Evening Attire streaking by in the background.

Go get ‘em old man!

Senior Power!

Evening Attire prior to the 2006 Excelsior Breeders’ Cup at Aqueduct (Sarah K. Andrew)

A very game Evening Attire ran down front running Barcola to win the Queens County Handicap.

The soon to be 10 year old looked astonishingly peppy in the parade, so much so I thought he was gonna wear himself out before the race! After running around like a 2 year old he seemed to take his customary gate nap, walking out as the race started.

He and Hunting sat quite far off the pace set by Barcola. He started to make up ground about half way through the backstretch and by the top of the stretch it was apparent that his pre-race pep was still in full effect. With his odd head bobbing run he poured it on to win by a nose.

I had him boxed with Nkosa Reigns as well as a box of Nkosa Reigns & Martial Asset + a tri box of Nkosa Reigns, Marital Asset and Hunting (who I thought might have done a little better).

What I thought was interesting about the old man is his last ‘2nd off’ start was his last win in addition to being the horse for the course.

Upcoming - Go Local!

During my morning procrastination that involves wandering aimlessly around the internet while sipping tea or snacking, I ended up at Upcoming (formerly Upcoming.org). I have an account there but hadn’t used it in well over a year. It’s part social networking, part promotional vehicle and part community “for discovering and sharing events”.

When last I was there it was a little project run by one person… I even got my first name as my username! They’ve since been bought by Yahoo and considerably jazzed up.

It works in a couple of different ways… you can select places, e.g., NYC, to have all events for that place on your upcoming home page. Anyone can list an event and you can indicate that you are either attending that event or watching it (meaning that you’re interested but perhaps not going). You can watch friend’s events as well. One of the newest features is that you can join and create groups and publish events to groups.

My first search was “horse racing”, natch… and I found listings for the 2008 Breeders’ Cup, Preakness & Belmont! They were listed by Dave, who clearly saw the potential for promotion. Naturally I marked the events accordingly and then started a Thoroughbred Racing Group (and made Dave co-moderator!).

I’ve already listed the NYRA Women in Racing Luncheon for tomorrow (while it’s a bit late, maybe someone will notice it and be on the look out for the next one) and Dave added the TV giveaway at Golden Gate Fields tomorrow. Side note: TV Giveaway?! Now that’s promotion!

So, go join Upcoming, join the Thoroughbred Racing Group and add your local events & races! See you there…
